The study of a language other than English is compulsory in Years 8 and 9 at Safety Bay Senior High School and students may choose to study either German or Indonesian.  Students may choose to continue their study of Language into Years 10, 11 and 12.

Languages uniquely develop students’ thinking skills and has far reaching implications for both their English communication and enhancing opportunities in Australia and overseas.  The study of languages encourages students to communicate effectively in a language other than English and students also develop an enhanced understanding of grammar and structure within the English language.

In Senior School students enrol in Certificate II – Applied Languages, specialising in either German or Indonesian.  As well as contributing to WACE graduation, students achieve certification recognised Australia wide on successful completion of their studies.

Exchanges and Tours

Exchanges with German schools in Gottingen.

This exchange is organised by the Modern Languages Teachers Association of Western Australia (MLTAWA) German Cultural Visits Program.  Each year students of German in Years 10, 11 and 12 are given the opportunity to travel to Germany and/or to host a student from Germany.  The exchange to Germany takes place in December and January over about six weeks.  Students stay with host families and also travel to various parts of Germany as a group.  Reciprocal hosting takes place in July and August over about four weeks.  This is a very popular exchange and provides each participant with a unique opportunity to both stay in the country, as well as interact with native German speakers.  Details about this exchange are provided by the teachers of German at Safety Bay Senior High School.

Malaysian Cultural and Language Tour

This tour is offered biannually to students of Indonesian in Years 10, 11 and 12. The tour takes place in either July or October and lasts for between 10 to 12 days. Students spend the first few days in a traditional Malay village, staying with local families. This gives them plenty of opportunities to practise the language and experience traditional life and customs.
They then spend the rest of their time in Melaka and Kuala Lumpur experiencing the multicultural way of life in both of these cities and taking part in a range of interesting cultural and language activities.  Details about this tour are provided by the teachers of Indonesian at Safety Bay Senior High School.

Language & Culture-German-Full Article
Shauna Harold, Year 11, was lucky to be chosen as part of a group of 17 German language students in WA to take part in the MLTAWA German Cultural Exchanges programme in 2011/12.  I was also fortunate to be one of the two teachers leading the group.  Shauna hosted her German student, Jennifer Dahm in July last year and then spent 5 weeks in Germany with her partner over the Christmas holidays.  Shauna and Grace, also Year 11, will both host German students, Anna Uskova and Frederieka Fuge this year in July.  Grace will travel to Germany as part of the programme during the coming Christmas break.

Mrs Anna Gow

Here are some snippets from Shauna's diary.

On Tuesday the 13th December we arrived exhausted in Munich but went straight into a tour of the town in our small groups.  the Christmas markets were fantastic and the food there delicious!
On our 2nd day, we travelled by train to Salzburg in Austria.  This is where Mozart was born and the Sound of Music was filmed.
On day 3 we went to Dachau to visit the first concentration camp started in Germany.  It was a dark but interesting experience.
We then headed for Goettingen to spend the next 3 weeks with our host families, living the German way of life and going to school.  We also  had many interesting excursions.  We experienced a real German Christmas and New Year with snow, fireworks and lots of different and delicious foods and drinks!  Despite the cold, everyone was outside on New Year's Eve, and at midnight, fireworks were going off everywhere.

In the Christmas holidays, I travelled north to the Baltic Sea and into Poland with my host family.  On January 11th, the group moved on to Berlin for 5 days.  We had so much fun there!  On the first day we went on a walking tour of the city with a very amusing and interesting guide.  Later we visited palaces, museums, the German parliament and of course, many shops.

On the 17th of January we arrived back in Perth exhausted but very happy and with very heavy cases.

I would recommend this tour to everyone who studies German in years 10, 11 and 12.
