Music

The Music Programme provides a valuable learning experience, combining behaviours which promote high order thinking skills. It develops listening, concentration and analytical skills which are transferable to other areas of learning, and promotes an understanding of music’s historical, social and cultural contexts.

Through music performances, students will develop self-esteem and use personal initiative in daily practice of their skills. They will adopt a sense of responsibility for their contribution to performance groups, which will promote an ability for them to work co-operatively through team work and group cohesiveness.

There are two Music Programmes running at Safety Bay Senior High School.

Special Music (years 8 – 10) caters for those students learning instruments at Primary School and those that wish to start learning in year 8. In accepting a place in the Special Music Programme students are undertaking a minimum three year commitment to one or more of these components:
  1. Classroom Music
Classroom music provides experiences in appreciation, creativity and performance of a diverse range of musical styles.
  2. Vocal Ensemble
Vocal ensemble is an optional component which fosters essential musical skills such as inner hearing and singing in tune. The ensemble participates in a number of performances throughout the year.
  3. Instrumental Music
Instrumental music is provided through the School of Instrumental Music (SIM) for selected students to learn brass, woodwind, percussion or classical guitar. Students come out of their usual classes for 20 – 40 minute lessons on their instrument each week.
  4. Concert Band or Guitar Ensemble
Ensemble is compulsory for students learning an instrument at school and is designed to further enhance performance and playing skills for instrumental music students. Rehearsals are extra-curricular and as such are held after school each week.

General Music (years 10 – 12) caters for those students who have an interest in contemporary music but do not necessarily have the knowledge of music theory. In these classes students have the opportunity to develop, perform and record their creative ideas whilst collaborating with their peers and industry professionals.

Drama

Drama The Year 8 Drama curriculum at Safety Bay Senior High School is an introduction to Drama and is oriented towards oral communication and performance skills.  Students who choose to continue their Drama studies through to Year 12 will develop skills in acting, script writing and analysis, stagecraft, mime, improvisation, stage design and lighting and sound.
